Suppressing the Springfield Armory

What happens when a Springfield Armory M1A Tanker 308 Rifle and a Silencer Central Banish 30 come together? Read on to find out!

[Info from Sam.S on The Firearm Blog](https://bit.ly/2HxyPMn)

The M1A Tanker is a part of Springfield Armory’s SOCOM 16 series of rifles and is paying homage to the prototype T26 Tanker Garand developed for Paratrooper and Jungle troops towards the end of World War Two. The Banish 30 is a quality 30 Caliber suppressor that is made of titanium and has a tube extension for all your sound suppression needs. Delta P Design's SOCOM Muzzle Thread Adapter was a huge helping hand in making this dream come true! Below are the specs for the main 2 components.

Other tools used to bring the two pieces together include: Sadlak Industries Gas Cylinder Wrench, a 3/8 socket and wrench (or some other gas plug removal tool), a small flat head screwdriver, and an Allen key set.

Now, here's a play by play of the process:

Starting out front the gas plug underneath the muzzle has to be removed. I used a 3/8 socket and wrench that was thin enough that I could properly loosen the gas plug without harming myself or any piece of the rifle. This plug came out very easily since I only had about 100 rounds through the gun at this point. The gas plug only needed to get started via the wrench and then I could remove by unscrewing by hand.

I would recommend the front sight be removed before or after the gas plug is removed. Take time and care as the hex key on the rear of the sight needs to be loosened and removed and the blade of a flathead gently placed in the space shown in the above photo in order to remove the tritium insert front sight. Do not force anything or you may damage your rifle or your sight.

After removing the front sight, to put on the Delta P Design SOCOM Muzzle Thread Adapter I used the Sadlak Industries Gas Cylinder Wrench to loosen the stock muzzle device on the M1A Tanker. This was the toughest part to remove for me so use caution if you try it yourself. At this point, the muzzle device can be threaded off and the SOCOM Muzzle Thread Adapter can be put on and the process starts essentially in reverse. Make sure when putting on the front sight that your hex screw is tight as mine ended up loosening at the range. I should mention the SOCOM Muzzle Thread Adapter was a perfect fit and I was very happy with how well it functioned as an adapter.

So, how did it do on the range?

This specific M1A variant probably was not engineered to ever have a suppressor on it but thinking like that just makes a person want to try it more. Range time with this gun is plenty of joy without a suppressor but with it? It is intensely cool, I am not going to lie to you. I was caught up in the excitement of going through with all of this when at the range I suddenly remembered that the only missing piece to this whole puzzle would be a different gas plug of sorts. I do not know if someone makes an adjustable one or if they have one specifically engineered for suppression but it would have been a welcome edition given the amount of gas I got to the forehead every time I fired a shot.

The gas back in my face was not too terribly unpleasant and I think the cool factor of it all overcame and made me forget about it. A noticeable side effect of all of this was both the ejected shell casings and the action of the gun specifically got very dirty and fouled up. I shot around 30-40 rounds of miscellaneous ammunition since I did not have any subsonic stuff on hand and the current state of the world made that a difficult thing to track down. The Banish 30 did an outstanding job of making mixed 308 Win and 7.62 NATO ammunition hearing safe although I did opt to have some muffs on after a few concussive blasts of gas hit me in the head which is no fault of the suppressor or rifle but my poor planning.

10mm Auto Aero Survival Rifle by TN

First introduced in 2012, the ASR was originally designed as an emergency survival rifle for downed bush pilots. Despite its survival-gun origins, TNW's ASR series has steadily gained a following among outdoor enthusiasts looking for rugged, multi-purpose carbines that are reliable in harsh environments. This easy-packing take-down rifle is an ideal option for the close-range harvesting of medium game, as a camp carbine or an emergency survival tool. (The company also offers a full feature 3-Day pack that comfortably holds one complete rifle and a caliber-conversion kit, along with plenty of pockets for other items you'll need in the field!)

A few years ago, the American manufacturing company chambered their Aero Survival Rifle (ASR) in 10mm Auto. TNW took the design to the next level by making it a caliber-convertible take-down rifle that incorporates modular AR-15-compatible components. The slim-profile barrel can be removed from the upper receiver by manually twisting the barrel nut. No tools are required, and no small parts to keep track of. This makes it easy to stow and simple to reassemble.

The one-piece tubular upper receiver is milled from aircraft-grade 6160 aluminum and treated to a hard-anodized finish in various colors, including Black, Dark Earth, OD Green and the Aero Gray option. The other aluminum components, including the lower receiver and barrel nut, are anodized to match. The lower controls are steel, including the smooth-faced trigger, the left-side magazine release button and the cross-bolt safety.

Just behind the barrel the receiver is drilled and tapped at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions to accept the 3-inch-long 7-slot M1913 Picatinny accessory rail provided with the rifle.

It's an ideal option for mounting lights or bipods. This rifle shipped with a six-position tube and an adjustable lightweight polymer shoulder stock. The Glock large-frame magazine well accepts both 10mm Auto and .45 ACP magazines. Could it get any more versatile?

Further Specifications:

Firearm Perfection Marlin 45 70

"Always recommend the #Marlin 1895 .45-70 Guide Gun Co-Pilot out of Wild West Guns in Anchorage, Alaska. The finest lever-action #carbine out there. Home defense and hunting. Will stop a man or buffalo! And its low velocity does not break your shoulder. It is a locomotive not a lightning bolt.

Sadly, many modern shooters think of lever action guns as old, dated “cowboy” guns.

What they don’t realize is how timeless they are. Well built, simple, side loading (you can keep them ‘topped off’ loaded max with ammo all the time). No problem with detachable mags. They were the original ‘assault rifle’ and still work great in modern times! Keep it simple!"

Col. Mike Howard

*Gun Rodeo Contributor*

Hunting season is just around the corner so here's some helpful tips on the best .45-70 ammo for hunting deer, bear, Moose, and other big game.

>Though it was originally loaded with black powder and introduced in the 1870s, the .45-70 Government is still a relevant and heavy hitting rifle cartridge. In fact, due to advances in powder and bullet technology, the .45-70 ammo is now even more effective for hunting than it ever has been. Known for its bone crushing power and excellent terminal performance on virtually every species of North American big game at short to medium range, hunters all over the United States still utilize the .45-70 for deer hunting in thick conditions and it’s also quite effective on black bear, feral hogs, moose, and grizzly bears.

50 Caliber

The .50 BMG (or 12.7×99mm NATO) is a cartridge developed for the Browning .50 caliber machine gun in the late 1910s. Entering service officially in 1921, the round is based on a greatly scaled-up .30-06 cartridge. The cartridge itself has been made in many variants: multiple generations of regular ball, tracer, armor piercing, incendiary, and saboted sub-caliber rounds.

John Browning had the idea for this round during World War I in response to a need for an anti-aircraft weapon. Similarly, in World War II the .50 BMG was also used (in the M2 Browning machine gun) for anti-aircraft purposes. These rounds can also effectively disable a vehicle when fired into the engine block, and will penetrate most commercial brick walls and concrete cinder blocks. Oh, the versatility!

This is the most powerful commonly available cartridge not considered a destructive device under the National Firearms Act, which is one reason why it is so desirable. Because it is on the heavier side its range and accuracy are superior when fixed on tripods. No wonder it is the standard caliber for western vehicle mounted machine guns!

Who uses .50 BMG?

-The U.S. Coast Guard uses it to disable outboard engines from armed helicopters during interdictions

-It is used by the New York City Police Department as well as the Pittsburgh Police

-The U.S. military uses .50 BMG weapons to detonate unexploded ordnance from a safe distance

-Popular among long-range shooters for its accuracy and external ballistics

-The cartridge is also used by some hunters for taking game at extreme ranges; while the energy of the .50 BMG at close range is excessive for most game, at long ranges the velocity has dropped to levels that allow the taking of game animals without casuing excessive damage

Ever thought about getting yourself a 50 cal? If you live in any of the following states, you're in luck!

Bad news if you live in CA, CT, or MD- these rifles are restricted.

The Noveske Space Invader

Introducing the Noveske Space Invader. It was given its catchy name from an eighties video game, but also is a tribute to its being a close-quarters weapon.

The compact size of the Space Invader is because of the Q stock assembly, which is much shorter than a traditional AR buffer tube. It also has 3 positions for length of pull on the stock.

There are great features borrowed from the MP5, like the paddle mag release, tri-lug barrel, and collapsible stock.

Other perks include: ambidextrous controls, quality ergonomics, light recoil ( due to the lightened bolt), and phenomenal accuracy out of the Noveske barrel.

Sometimes you pay for the innovation, and others you pay for the brand name. With the Noveske Space Invader, you pay for both, because this is one of the most expensive sub guns available.

Femme Fatale

This amazing ring sold at auction for $11,350. What makes it so expensive and cool, you may ask? Well, it is a fully functional revolver of course! Around the web, details vary as to whether it is originated from Germany or France. My bet goes to France as 'Femme Fatale' is a french term for "Fatal Woman". The same phrase in German is (according to shoddy Google translate) "Fatale Frau", which is clearly not what is engraved on the ring band. Germany is possibly connected as where the silver for the band came from. Details also vary about the age of the ring, but the average guess seems to be around mid to late 1800's. The ring features a 7-shot, brown-finished cylinder with fold-down trigger and outer spring band. There is also a set of 7 cartridges and a mini screwdriver included in the brown leather with green velvet lined box. It is doubtful that this would do much more damage than a pellet gun, but i suppose that is more than enough at close range. Upon further investigation, this ring was sold individually, and as a set. Aptly named the ‘Les Companions’ set, featuring a matching Femme Fatale ring and a slightly larger Le Petit Protector ring. If you are a big fan of this design, a google search of "gun ring" will provide pictures of the old ones (you will be hard pressed to find a real antique one of these actually for sale), and some companies that make new models.

Ladies with a vendetta, or a penchant for jewelry that also serves as a weapon, I'm afraid you can't buy the Femme Fatale Ring Gun. (Unless the person who paid $11,350 for it at auction would be willing to sell it to you for $11,351.)

The Big Bang Pistol Set

Last year, Cabot Guns released their Big Bang Pistol set for auction. The matched left and right pair of 1911s are two of a kind, the only two Cabot has and will ever build. The cool part is that they are made entirely from a 77-pound hunk of the Gibeon meteor. 100% of pistol components, including the barrel bushing and trigger, are 100% Gibeon meteorite. For extra quality assurance, their engineers used electron beam technology to add bimetal support to the frame / slide rails, hammer, guide rod, and extractor.

A little background: the Gibeon meteor is an interstellar visitor that crash landed on Earth in prehistoric times, but wasn't discovered by Western civilization until the early 1800s. Having taken up residence in Namibia, the ancient Nama people had been using bits of the meteor's iron-nickel alloy to build tools and weapons for thousands of years. Cabot gots its share in 2015, and began working on their effort to turn space rocks into pistols.

Triple Barrel Shotgun

Turkish gunmaker Chiappa makes two models of 12-gauge triple barrel shotguns. Both models have "Rem-choke" and a 3" x 3" Magnum capacity. The Triple Crown boasts three 28" barrels. The Triple Threat model's barrels measure 18-1/2", and includes a wooden stock that can be partly disassembled. Both of the shotgun models fire clockwise, beginning with the lower right barrel.*Update* Upon further investigation, this retailer has discontinued both models of their triple barreled shotguns. But if you like them enough, I'm sure you could find a few for resale somewhere.

Weird Guns

There are plenty of odd guns out there- weird concepts, ones that just never stuck, and ones that weren't all that practical. Here are a few of those oddballs that you may not have come across before!

The Duck’s Foot Gun-This model features four individual barrels arranged to resemble the foot of a duck (hence the name). When firing, this gun hits more than one target at a time making the recoil a bit much for some.

The Key Gun-These are functional as both a key, as well as a pistol. They were first put into use by 16th century Jail guards as protection when opening a cell door.

The Lemat Revolver- This is two guns in one! The Top main barrel fires 42 caliber pistol rounds, while the barrel right below it holds a load of buckshot.

The Harmonica Gun-This Gun has a steel slide containing a number of chambers with bores for the bullets. It was designed by John Browning in both pistol and rifle formats.

Disposable Pistols-World War II resistance fighters would use disposable pistols made from sheet metal, costing only $1.72.

How many unconventional guns have you come across as a gun owner? Some firearms can be really unusual that even hardcore gun enthusiasts wouldn’t believe they actually exist!

AR15 vs AK47

The AR15 and the AK47 are some of the most widely recognized names in the world of rifles. The two are quite different and therefore not fairly comparable. If you are having a hard time choosing between the two, here are some key differences. The AR is more complicated but is more ergonomical. The AK is much simpler but has less ergonomical value. The AR has a maximum effective range of about 800 yards, while the AK has about 300 yards. ARs are more modular than AKs. The AK is a Russian gun operated with a long-stroke piston. The AR is an American rifle that utilizes a variation of the gas impingement system. But whatever you choose, both are truly great reliable weapons!

Debating on whether the AR or the AK is “better” is like arguing whether a Ford Mustang is superior to a John Deere tractor. Both have four wheels, engines and transmissions, but they were designed for completely different applications. The AR and AK do exactly what they were designed to do, and they both do it well.

Have you ever seen a rifle with a curved barrel? This German WW2 Krummlauf (after the German term for “curved barrel”) was made to be fired from a concealed area, such as popping out of the top of a tank.

During WWII, the Germans produced a variant of their Sturmgewehr 44 — the world’s first mass-produced assault rifle — with a curved barrel so that it could be fired from cover or concealment, particularly to hose down “cling-on” enemy infantry swarming on the outside of a tank. Dubbed the “Krummlauf” after the German term for “curved barrel,” these guns are rare today and fetch over $60K at auction.

Over 1000 women served as pilots during WWII, taking on vital roles operating aircraft in non-combat positions so their male counterparts could directly engage the enemy. These women aviators were pioneers in the profession, facing all of the risks and challenges shared by pilots of the time period. By war’s end, 38 had given their lives in service to their country.

Colt Competition 9mm 1911

Click the link below to watch/read a review of Colt's Competition 9mm 1911 handgun.

When it comes to American gun brands few are as classic as Colt. From the 1873 Model P “Peacemaker” to Army-issue M-16s the Colt name has been part of what makes America great. Like most companies of their age (over 160 years) they've been through ups and downs. Today Colt exists relatively quietly in the industry without much fanfare. I suspect that's because they're comfortable with their history and have become something of a collector's brand. I was also curious to see how modern Colts perform. When I had a chance to get my hands on a 9mm 1911 from Colt's Competition line I couldn't pass it up.

Stribog 9mm

Besides this gun looking really cool, its name is pretty cool too. Stribog is the name of the ancient Slavic god of storms and force. Click the link to the article below and see why they gave it such an epic name.

What sets Stribog apart from other firearms in this category is the “Dynamic blowback mass bolt” action which places much of the weight required for safe operation above and in front of the chamber. As a result, Stribog is less than 15″ long including the 8″ barrel. For comparison that's a longer barrel and shorter overall length than the popular CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1 Pistol!

LWRC REPR MKII Elite In 6.5 Creedmo

LWRC's REPR MKII Elite In 6.5 Creedmoor is being praised for its incredible accuracy. The 22" barrel has a lot to do with it, plus it dis spells a lot of heat that would have otherwise been problematic. Plus its #ambidextrous !

The rifle is nicely outfitted with some of the nicest components on the market like a PROOF Research barrel and a Geissele trigger. LWRC made sure that while the rifle carries a premium price tag, the component list justified the MSRP. Other features like an efficient 4 port brake and a Magpul PRS stock start to hint at the level of accuracy that the rifle is capable of.

Regulus Pistol

The Regulus Pistol form Lionheart Industries feels like a fully custom gun- the action is said to be incredibly smooth, and you can mix and match slide length, barrel color, frame style, and frame color to your specifications.

Reminding many of a blend between the Smith & Wesson 5906 and Browning High Power, the LH-9 offered a bit more with its “double action plus” trigger system. More on that can be found in our original article on the LH-9 here. In this article we'll be talking about their new, American-made Regulus and what makes it different. Most notable is that the Lionheart Industries Regulus Pistol line is made entirely in the United States aside from the magazine which comes from reputable MecGar. But the Regulus isn't just an American clone of the LH-9, it's an evolution.

Henry’s Original Carbine

Henry’s Original Carbine is a classic piece, highly sought after by collectors. The wood and brass accents give a solid and western look. But this #rifle is not only a looker- it's a great shooter too!

The polished brass receiver lends the gun its traditional looks, as does the historically accurate lack of a wood forend. While the brass is flashy, it’s important to note that it’s not merely a brass overlay or receiver cover. Henry Repeating Arms specially formulated a hardened brass process with the same tensile strength of steel, meaning shooters needn’t be concerned with the receiver stretch that has been rumored to plague other cheaper reproductions.

rare StG 44

This rare StG 44 German World War II Rifle was seized and later Donated to the U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command. Normally weapons that are seized and not to be returned to their owners are destroyed, but thankfully in this case a piece of history was saved.

The Chesapeake Police Department seized a Sturmgewehr 44 in 2009 from a felon that could no longer possess the firearm. Seeing that it had historical significance — the StG 44 is considered by many to be the first true “assault rifle” due to its select-fire design and use of an intermediate cartridge — the agency rendered it inoperable and this week moved to have the City Council approve donating the piece to the U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command. The resolution was approved 8-0 on Tuesday without discussion.

.32 Squirrel Rifle

Muzzle loaders seem to be coming back into fashion for a few reasons. The First is nostalgia and shooters wanting a bit of a challenge. Another is the security of knowing that in times of ammo being scarce and highly sought after you will likely be able to find or make ammo for your Muzzle loader. And with all of the talk of gun bans going on, this archaic design likely wouldn't be anywhere near the top of the list to be banned, given the extra time it takes to load. All things to think about when investing in a lifelong firearm. This may not be your first choice for a weapon, but possibly consider it as a trusty back up piece.

At 25 yards the CVA can still hold it’s own, but unlike some of the larger calibers, I can tell you that the fouling starts to hit the .32 pretty hard after a few shots. Generally, with my larger guns like my .45 and .58 rifles, I can get well over a dozen rounds with Triple 7 before I need to think about cleaning it. After about ten yards with the .32 accuracy has suffered to the point where the group size is about the size of a baseball and gets bigger after every shot from then on.

The Competition Just Got Real...Rea

Say hello to my little friend the Remington #VersaMax Competition Tactical, aka "The Hulk." This semi-auto gas piston punching machine comes competition-ready with incredible features. This recoil reducing bulldog is lightweight, which makes it a dream to maneuver on the competition field. Find out why this shotgun gets the #GunRodeo approval.

Not too long ago #3gun shooters who wanted to run a semi-auto shotgun needed to buy a “tactical” or hunting shotgun, tear it apart, and build it back up to get the right configuration. That’s what I did with my Mossberg 930 to get it into competition shape, but even then there are plenty of things I’d like to improve. Remington, though, has recently released a version of their relatively new (for a centuries-old company) Versa Max smoothbore that’s designed specifically for the 3-gun crowd — the Competition Tactical.

The Cimarron 1849 Colt Revolver gives you the feeling of wild west nostalgia. There's just something about using powder, lead balls, and caps that feels good, even though it is more work, you get more smoke and flame when firing.

Cimarron Firearms out of Fredricksburg, Texas imports today’s Colt 1849 revolvers from the manufacturer, Uberti of Italy. Cimarron’s version differs somewhat from the base model offered for import. At first glance, it was easy to get distracted by the contrasting colors and shapes when I first opened the box and retrieved the pistol. It is entirely faithful to the original lines and features of what was produced generations earlier.

S&W Pro Series 9mm 1911

The S&W Pro Series 9mm 1911 is a great quality and reliable piece .

As one would hope, the SW1911 Pro Series 9mm performed flawlessly. Is this the cheap-o anyone can grab and keep on hand for self defense? No. Is it a functioning, reliable 9mm 1911? Yes. I'm sure some will scoff at the price tag and that's ok. Not every gun is for everyone, just like not every car is for everyone. I prefer to celebrate diversity and experience as much as I can. In the case of this pistol, I can say my expectation of what a 9mm 1911 can be have been raised.

Auto-Ordnance Victory Girls 1911

Auto-Ordnance's Victory Girls 1911 pistol includes 2 beautiful laser engravings, a pin up and an "updated" rosie the riveter topped off with a nice Cerakote finish.

Auto-Ordnance Corporation, a member of the Kahr Firearms Group, has released their Victory Girls 1911. This is a refreshing twist on the recent resurgence of GI-style 1911s. Few can argue the elegance of Browning's famous 1911, but why not ad some artwork? That's exactly what Auto-Ordnance has done with some period-inspired laser etching and Cerakote coloring.

CMMG MkG Banshee

The CMMG MkG Banshee is a light, easy, and fun shoot!

The MkG Banshee model I’ve been working with is the .45 ACP pistol variant. It uses the Gear Head Works pistol brace which has quickly become my favorite brace design, bar none. It’s got a well-rounded comb for a usable cheek weld. It’s got a locking, five-position mechanism to adjust the length of pull. The one-hand brace part is brilliant. Half of what appears to be a stock folds down to a horizontal position. This part rests under your forearm, so your big arm muscles are supporting the weight of the Banshee – not your firing hand. That allows you to concentrate on aim and trigger operation.

It shares many base features with other polymer-frame striker pistols like tilt-barrel, locked-breech operation, but includes many Beretta signature and design features equally applicable to the Army contract requirements and needs of civilian users.

Tisas Regent BR9 from LKCI

Does the name #Browning Hi-Power sound familiar? Used by several police forces at home and abroad. Deep roots in the armed forces in more than 50 nations it still reigns in as one of the most sought after firearms by collectors and shooters. But after Browning FN stopped production in 2000, many have produced copies of the classic, but none could compare…until now that is. Meet the Regant BR9 by LKCL.

The Browning High Power is one of those classics that I've always wanted to try. Regarded as one of Browning's last designs, the pistol wasn't produced until after his death. Despite being in service since 1935 used guns aren't common and can cost $800 or more. Thanks to LKCI, LLC of Ohio and Tisas we now have an excellent modern production variant, the Regent BR9.

.300 Blackout Pistol

The attached article follows Josh Wayner as he builds a .300 Blackout Pistol.

The thing about my projects with the .300 Blackout is that they started out at 16”. The caliber, when it was introduced, was marketed with short barrels that were handy to use with suppressors. The hand-in-hand relationship between the suppressor and the .300 BLK is the same as peanut butter and jelly. The thing about PB&J is that many people readily eat the PB part with a spoon, much the same way as they own an AR SBR or pistol without a suppressor. The ‘jelly’ in our equation, the suppressor, isn’t always as accessible to the average consumer as we would like, and most people I know don’t eat jelly with a spoon unless they’re a backward savage.

The TP9 SA Mod 2 is one of nine options currently offered by Century Arms and has the lowest MSRP in the lineup of just $399.99. What sets this variant apart is the decocking lever on the slide. This model's decocker intended to permit safe disassembly without needing to pull the trigger.
